Job Title: Lab Operations Lead

Location: Westborough, MA

This role is to initially set up a contract analysis facility within the Malvern Panalytical Site at Westborough, Mass. USA. Working with stakeholders within Quality, Laboratory Operations, Project management and finance together with the local site leadership the aim is to establish a laboratory operation capable of delivering specified services to the US market. The role would suit a candidate who has experience within a CRO environment and has a desire to make a substantial impact to a growing business. Initially the role will require delivery of scientific services to the clients, so the ability to support clients in the material science space for the Pharma and Food sector is critical.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The CLS Westborough operational leader role involves leading the Westborough site with respect to overall site operations, including for the analytical, technical and quality functions. There is an expectation that role holder will also be involved in considering strategic and operational issues outside the day to day scope of their activities.

  • Overseeing and guiding laboratory operations at the Westborough site, including personal delivery of scientific services.

  • Develop resources (personnel and capital) to ensure the timely delivery of projects, both internal and external customers, including budgetary constraints and the importance of working to deadlines.

  • Be proactive and highly flexible in the aiding of adjusting work plans to ensure priorities are met, working with high levels of self-motivation and enthusiasm

  • Ensure data, reports and conclusions/recommendations are in the appropriate format or to customers' requirements in line with operational policies or regulatory obligations

  • Working with finance colleagues to accurately capture revenue and contribution to the CAPEX and facilities budget process.

  • Ensure that the scientific quality of services is in line with client expectations

  • Implement and maintain an appropriate quality system for Laboratory Operations.

  • Both with and without the support of other management team members, deciding on actions required to protect the company from financial risks, particularly with respect to day to day operations and delivery of projects.

  • Ensuring that the cost base of the site is managed in line with expected budgets and seeking opportunity for cost reduction where possible Deciding on, receiving and analyzing data used to monitor and measure the operational performance of the company, and raising with management issues and concerns as they arise.

  • Supporting the assessment of investments (including systems, equipment, employees and sub-contractors) which facilitate the operational efficiency of the company.

  • Lead and comply with H&S requirements established for the site and proactively make recommendations for improvement

  • Delivery and accountability for laboratory, collation of MI date to discuss with Operations and Sales Leadership Team.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Delivery of client solutions

  • Operational compliance and Quality assurance of the laboratory activity

  • Budgetary accountability for site processing operations, with significant focus on cost control including reporting and forecasting

  • For successful program / project completion, delivering requirements to target states, on budget and within agreed time frames.

  • Influencing stakeholders in order that business benefits are realized.

  • Facility maintenance – equipment, infrastructure and buildings, planned and unplanned maintenance, equipment calibrations, cleaning, service provider contract management and utility management.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Science Degree or equivalent, with extensive practical laboratory experience

  • Commercially astute ideally with experience in the CRO industry.

  • Experience leading teams with up to 50 employees.

  • Business planning, translating business and strategy driven concepts into workable solutions

  • Self motivated, reliable and enthusiastic

  • Loyal and Team player

  • Experience of managing capital projects

  • Relevant Health and Safety Experience.

Knowledge

  • Scientifically credible and able to deliver services within the laboratory.

  • Knowledge of CRO operations

  • Knowledge of quality principles and tools (problem analysis, statistical tools, design of experiments, control charts, and other quality methodologies)
